Today, I want to encourage you to embrace simplicity in all aspects of problem-solving and goal-planning.
You might wonder why I’m trying to sell you simplicity? Three reasons:
Simplicity fuels peaceful growth—something I truly want for you.
In a world that glorifies complexity, it's easy to overlook the transformative power of simplicity.
Simplicity isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. It often requires more focus, but the results speak for themselves.
You might wonder, why wouldn’t someone choose a simple solution over a complicated one?
Do you know what happened in England? When the first steamtrain was introduced, no one was willing to ride it. Despite persuasion and bribes, people couldn’t believe that something as simple as steam—the same steam that powers a kitchen kettle—could move an engine carrying hundreds of passengers. Eventually, twelve prisoners were used as the first passengers to test the train.
It may seem absurd that people doubted the steam engine’s potential, but we often dismiss simple ideas, strategies, and actions because they seem too good to be true.
Think about the atomic bomb, built on the simple concept of nuclear fission—the splitting of an atom. This simple process, harnessing energy from common elements like rocks and dirt, led to one of the most powerful inventions in history.
But enough about science—let's explore how simplicity can be applied in real life:
Investment: John C. Bogle, in his book The Little Book of Common Sense Investing, argued that the simplest investment strategies (like investing in low-cost index funds) are often the most effective. Complexity in investing typically leads to higher costs, more mistakes, and lower returns.
Business: A successful business can be built on a foundation of simple, focused strategies. I've wasted time and money chasing shiny objects, but in the end, the simple strategies delivered the best results.
Relationships: Simple acts of care and appreciation often leave a lasting impact. A thoughtful text or a handwritten note can mean more than an expensive gift or fancy date night. While gifts and dates are great, remember that a simple act of love can be just as powerful.
Habits: Simplicity in habit-building leads to consistency. When a plan is straightforward, it’s easier to stick with, leading to sustained progress. By simplifying your routines, you create space for what truly matters, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Key Takeaway:
Simplicity is a powerful tool that, when embraced, can lead to peaceful growth, greater focus, and sustained success in all areas of life. By eliminating distractions and focusing on what truly matters, simplicity helps us achieve more with less.
Steve Jobs understood the power of simplicity in both design and thought:
“Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
🚀 Growth Tip
I want to share the concept of using "life energy" as a currency when making important decisions (which I learned from the book ‘Die with Zero’).
Life energy represents all the hours you have to live and do things—and every time we work, we’re spending some of that finite energy. On average, assuming an 80-year lifespan, we have about 700,000 hours of life energy.
So, if you’re earning $20 an hour, spending $20 is equivalent to spending an hour of your life energy.
For example:
When I see a nice-looking shirt or a cool gadget, I do the mental math and think, "Is it worth working two hours just to buy this shirt?"
When I see a donut, I ask myself, "Is this donut worth an hour of working out?"
