Manager Thinks, Operator Executes.
We all play a Manager and Operator mode every day.
When you make plans (I’ll go to the gym this weekend. I’ll read a book tomorrow.), that’s your Manager mode in planning. When you actually go to the gym or pick up a book and read, that’s your Operator mode in action.
The Manager is very “ambitious”, but the Operator is “lazy”.
The Manager brain likes to make big plans, resolutions, and promises. While the Operator is always looking for ways to procrastinate. Therefore, when you are in Manager mode (aka planning mode), your goal should be to make the operator's life easy by eliminating all friction.
If you are more aware of these two modes, you can leverage both strengths and be much more productive and effective with your life, work, and goals.
Here is how we should leverage both the Manager and Operators strengths.
(Manager) Have time daily to think and plan for the future → (Operator) Focus on execution.
(Manager) Put all your plans and ideas on the calendar → (Operator) Follow the calendar schedule and trust Manager’s plan.
(Manager) Add task outlines, links, documents, etc., in the calendar → (Operator) All the instructions and details to execute this task are there; just do it.
We spend a lot of time in Operator mode because it gives us a cheap dopamine hit to check things off our to-do list. But we should also be more intentional about activating Manager mode often.
Have a few hours beginning of each week to plan for the next week.
Have a few hours end of every month to reflect and plan for the next month.
Have a few days every quarter to plan for the next quarter.
End of each year, reflects on your past performance and plan for the next year.
Prepare today for your next day.
Key takeaway: Be more aware when you are in thinking and doing modes. Don’t let your Operator mode decide what you should be working on now. And don’t let your manager mode jump into getting things done for instant gratification.
🚀 Growth Tip
I bought a visual book summary of 50 must-read personal growth books. I’m sharing the summary of the 5-second Rule book, which I read a few years ago. This will help you work on the Operator mode more effectively.
