The Healing Power of Nature: How It Boosts Health and Performance
Would you believe me if I told you that nature, or even just photographs of trees and water, can help you heal faster, be more productive, learn better, and improve your overall performance?
I didn’t believe it either—until recently.
In the past few years, I've started appreciating nature more, spending time in parks, mountains, trails, and rivers. It wasn't just the feel-good vibes and peace that drew me in; it was something deeper.
The Science Behind Nature’s Healing Power
Let me share a few scientific studies that show how spending time in nature (physically or virtually) benefits your brain and body.
Study 1: The View from the Window
In a quiet suburban Pennsylvania hospital, two groups of patients were recovering from gallbladder surgery. One group had rooms with windows overlooking leafy trees, while the other faced a plain brick wall.
Roger Ulrich, an assistant professor studying environmental aesthetics, discovered that patients with a view of trees healed a whole day faster, needed less pain medication, and had fewer complications than those staring at a brick wall.
This study shows that spending time in nature is good for our health. But you might think, “Anil, not everyone has easy access to nature, especially in urban areas.”
Study 2: The Power of Virtual Nature
Let me share another study that confirms that just creating a virtually natural environment has a similar effect.
Roger Ulrich (the same guy who did the first study) and his team studied 160 heart surgery patients in the intensive care unit, placing them in rooms with different views: a simulated 'window view' with a nature photo (either a serene stream with trees or a dark forest), abstract paintings, a plain white panel, or a blank wall.
The results were remarkable. Patients with the tranquil water and tree scene experienced less anxiety and needed less pain medication. In contrast, those exposed to the darker forest, abstract art, or no images fared worse.
The science is clear: connecting to nature, even virtually, takes less time and effort than you think. These connections can happen in less than a minute.
Study 3: Nature Boosts Learning and Performance
Nature doesn't just help us heal; it also enhances learning and performance.
In one study, researchers gathered 150 university students and put them through a test designed to measure focus. Before and after the test, the participants took a 40-second 'micro-break' to view either a green roof or a concrete roof.
Students who glimpsed the green roof made significantly fewer errors and showed more consistent focus than their peers who viewed the concrete roof.
Simple Ways to Integrate Nature into Your Day
Here are a few easy ways to boost your daily performance by leveraging nature:
Every few hours, go for a short walk around your neighborhood park or trails (if possible).
Hang nature posters in your home office or put some indoor plants.
Use a nature-themed screensaver on your computer.
Go on long hikes in the forest or mountains once a week.
Summary:
Nature replenishes our cognitive abilities, boosts our energy, and lowers stress. Soak in the beauty of the natural world to recharge properly. As I write this, I’m overlooking a serene natural scene, feeling the benefits of nature's power.
I guess my humble request here is to embrace nature and watch how it transforms your health and performance.
🚀 Growth Tip
I think you all know this guy—Sam Altman of OpenAI (ChatGPT). I listened to his podcast interview with Joe Rogan. I was impressed (and scared at the same time) by what I learned about the future of AI. I think you will find this interview fascinating.

[On a different note, here’s something I’m excited to share to help you boost your productivity and performance through better writing in 2025]
How Samir, an Engineer, Transformed His Career with One Skill
Samir wasn’t a writer. He was a software engineer, great at building things but struggled when it came to explaining ideas, pitching projects, or sharing updates.
After being passed over for a promotion, he realized something: It wasn’t his technical skills holding him back—it was his writing.
He signed up for a copywriting course, thinking it would help him write better emails. (It did that and more.)
In a few months, Samir’s emails were clear and persuasive. His project proposals got approved faster. He became the go-to person for internal presentations. And, yes—he finally got that promotion.
Why? Because writing is a meta-skill.
Whether you’re an engineer, designer, accountant, or manager, writing impacts everything. Emails, reports, pitches, presentations—good writing makes you more productive, more effective, and more valuable.
Here’s the good news: WRITING IS A SKILL. You don’t “have it”, you learn it.
If you can improve only one skill in 2025, make it writing.
I’ve spent over $5,000 on different writing courses, and out of all of them, I highly recommend CopyThat—an email-based copywriting course you can complete in just 30 minutes a day for 10 days.
