I Went From 0 to 30 Books a Year With These 5 Reading Tips 📚
Issue #3 : If book reading is important to you, but you are struggling, these tips will help and inspire you on your journey to build a book reading habit.
A confession:
I never loved reading books growing up.
The first book I read was in 2011, and it was Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.
I knew book reading was important for my growth, but it felt like a slow and boring way to learn especially because I didn’t love reading books.
But then, in 2017, I got obsessed with reading books!
— I read 8 books in that year and 15 books in 2018.
— In 2020, I read 42 books in one year.
— Within 5 years, I read 130+ books.
— Now I read 25-30 books a year.
Book reading has helped me:
— Growing my business by 65% year-over-year.
— Taking good care of my health and overall wellness.
— Become more inclusive and compassionate.
— Improving the quality of my thoughts and actions.
— Getting better at coping with my anxiety and stress.
— To master the art of learning.
— Grow more intellectually and spiritually.
— Boost my confidence and competence.
— Increased my productivity and efficiency
Here are the 5 tips that helped me with my book reading habit:
#1 Reading should be a daily practice, not a goal.
— Make reading a daily habit and part of your routine.
— Think of reading as a relaxing break, not homework.
— Commit to reading a few pages, a few chapters, or for a few minutes daily.
— Consistency > Quality and Quantity
Quality will improve gradually if you stay consistent. And small, consistent efforts over time will beat the Quantity.
If you read 30 mins everyday = 30 pages
1 week = 210 pages = 1 book
1 month = 900 pages = 3-4 books
1 Year = ~36-48 books
#2 Try Audiobooks. ⭐️
— Listening to audiobooks is much more effective and fun compare to actual books if you are just getting started.
— Audiobooks work best because you can listen to them anywhere and anytime, doing any mindless activities: walking, biking, commuting, eating, etc.
— Start with listening to biographies and novels on audiobooks.
— Practice listening to podcasts if you are new to audiobooks.
#3 Read Plan Like A Meal Plan.
Morning — Motivational Book, Biographies of your role models.
Daytime — Skill Development, Personal Development.
Bedtime — Spirituality, Relationship, Fun, Entertaining.
Weekend — Learning about Health, Finance, Leadership, and professional developments.
#4 If reading books feels boring, try this:
— If you are not hooked after two chapters, pick another book.
— Feel free to skip a chapter or section if you don’t find it enlightening.
— Your taste and interest in books change over time; go back to old books.
— Making reading a fun experience by going to a new place or library.
#5 My Advice for the Book Format.
Paperback — Weekend reading, at-home reading, books with many graphs, charts, stats, pictures, etc.; books with great visuals and arts.
Audiobook — Biography, Novel, best when traveling, commuting, or doing mindless activities.
Kindle — Good for spiritual books, when traveling, and bedtime book reading.
Book Summaries — Read after you finish a book or read before you buy the actual book.
